About this programme

The Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultural Studies offers instruction in Spanish language and literature, both in the original and in translation, and courses in the civilization and culture of Spanish-speaking countries. The study of second languages is fundamental to an education in the liberal arts. With globalization progressing at a rapid speed, dealing with people from a variety of cultural and linguistic backgrounds is becoming increasingly important. By studying other languages and cultures, we do not only learn about them, but also get a deeper understanding of ourselves. Knowledge of specific second languages is important in many undergraduate and graduate programs and an advantage or necessity in many careers. The ability to read and communicate in a second language also opens doors, otherwise closed, to gratifying personal and cultural experiences.
