Students must complete an examination in eight papers and a thesis of 40,000 words within five years. Candidates study independently for the examination but may obtain advice and a bibliography on each subject from the School of Religion.

Entry requirements
Applicants must: Hold a degree in Theology from Trinity College Dublin, or other university approved by the University Council; OR Hold a degree in any subject from Trinity College Dublin or other university approved by the University Council and a Divinity Testimonium or a Professional Diploma in Theology from Trinity College Dublin; OR Hold a degree in any subject from Trinity College Dublin or other university approved by the University Council and pass a qualifying examination. Details of the qualifying examination may be obtained directly from the School of Religion.
