EPSRC Doctoral Landscape Award Studentship: "Advancing Contrast-Enhanced Ultrasound for Functional Microvascular Assessment"

Who it is for

• Funded EPSRC DLA PhD studentship in the School of Biomedical Engineering & Imaging Sciences to start 1 October 2026.
• There is an urgent clinical need for non-invasive methods to accurately assess the local environment and function in conditions such as sepsis.
• Such capability would enable improved monitoring of disease progression, support timely intervention, and ultimately improve patient outcomes..
• This project aims to advance contrast-enhanced ultrasound by exploring and developing its ability to probe the environment, integrating principles from multiple state-of-the-art techniques, and new experimental approaches..
• The specific objectives are:.
• To characterise microbubble signal responses to their local environment..
• To develop methods to extract clinically relevant information from these signals..
• To design and optimise acquisition pipelines to effectively exploit these signal characteristics..
• Bachelor's degree with 2:1 honours in Applied Mathematics / Mathematics, Biomedical Engineering or another engineering-related discipline, Biomedical Sciences, Computer Science, Medicine, Physics..
• A 2:2 degree may be considered only where applicants also offer a Master's degree with Merit or above..

Good to know

Each studentship is fully funded for 3.5 years. This includes tuition fees, a stipend, and generous project consumables.. Stipend: Students will receive a tax-free stipend at the UKRI rate of £23,805 (academic year 2026/27) per year as a living allowance.. Research Training Support Grant (RTSG) : A generous project allowance will be provided for research consumables and for attending UK and international conferences..
