Key requirements
- Acceptance at an SEVP-approved school and receipt of Form I-20
- Pay the SEVIS I-901 fee before applying
- Demonstrate sufficient funds to cover tuition and living expenses
- Maintain a residence abroad with no intent to abandon
- Sufficient English proficiency or enrollment in language courses
Working on this visa
On-campus employment must not exceed 20 hours a week while school is in session (8 CFR 214.2(f)(9)(i)).
Bringing family
Spouse and children can apply for F-2 visas (F-2 cannot work).
After this visa
Eligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT): 12 months, plus a 24-month STEM extension.
