The Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MB ChB), commonly referred to as the 'medical degree', begins with the prescribed Health Sciences First Year after which students apply for admission to second year medicine.
International students need a secondary-school qualification recognised as equivalent to New Zealand University Entrance. Widely accepted qualifications include Cambridge International A-levels (typically at least 120 NZ Tariff points), the IB Diploma (minimum 24 points), and many recognised national qualifications assessed country-by-country. Applicants who do not meet direct entry can qualify through a foundation-year programme or one year of study at an institution of university standing. Some programmes require specific subjects, and a satisfactory level of English is required.
