In industry, there is a strong demand for skilled engineers who can work confidently across both mechanical and electrical engineering. We need people who can design effective, informed systems that interchange and manage electrical and mechanical energy.Our MEng Mechanical and Electrical Engineering with a Year in Industry course gives you the fundamental knowledge, tools and real-world experience to satisfy this growing industrial demand.This course gives you the opportunity to spend your third year applying the knowledge amassed in your first two years of study in an industrial environment. There's no direct entry onto the course, but you can transfer from MEng Mechanical and Electrical Engineering after year two if you reach a high academic standard and are successful at an industry interview.You'll study units from the mechanical and electrical disciplines in key themes:design and integration of electro-mechanical systemsenergy conversion and actuation systemsembedded systems and controlpower electronics and electric drivesenergy management.Years one and two offer a grounding in mathematics, thermal management, dynamics and control, computing, electrical energy technologies, and electronics. Laboratory work and case studies will draw together these interdisciplinary foundations.Your third year takes you into industry, where you can apply what you've learned, work alongside professionals and tackle real-world challenges.In your fourth year, you'll return to Bristol and join year three of the MEng Mechanical and Electrical Engineering course. As well as classroom-based subjects, you'll take on a themed project. Working in a team of peers along with an academic project supervisor, you'll apply the knowledge and skills that you have developed to a specific topic area. Topics might include actuation and sensor systems; intelligent, adaptable power systems; or efficient, clean propulsion technologies.Finally, in year five, you'll work on a significant project around your preferred theme. Here, you'll solve an engineering problem related to your chosen subject matter. You'll also have a choice of units offering more in-depth engineering topics.Mechanical and Electrical Engineering graduates will be equipped to innovate in a range of technological areas. These might include:the power flow of renewable energy microgridsactuation systems for motion control or roboticsthe complete power train of future electric vehicles.
