There is strong industrial demand for innovative, efficient and reliable systems that interchange and manage electrical and mechanical energy.Our BEng Mechanical and Electrical Engineering with a Year in Industry course gives you the fundamental knowledge, tools and real-world experience to meet this industry demand in a unique way.This degree provides the opportunity to spend your third year applying the knowledge gained in your first two years of study in an industrial environment. There's no direct entry onto the course, but you can transfer from BEng Mechanical and Electrical Engineering after year two. To do this, you must meet a high academic standard and succeed in an industry interview.During the course, you'll study units from mechanical and electrical disciplines in key themes:design and integration of electro-mechanical systemsenergy conversion and actuation systemsembedded systems and controlpower electronics and electric drivesenergy management.Years one and two offer a solid grounding in core subjects including mathematics, thermal management, dynamics and control, computing, electrical energy technologies, and analogue and digital electronics. Laboratory work and case studies draw together these interdisciplinary foundations.Your third year takes you into industry. It's your chance to apply what you've learned, working alongside professionals and tackling real-world challenges. You'll return in your final year to year three of the BEng Mechanical and Electrical Engineering programme. As well as classroom-based subjects, you'll engage in a research project with a team of peers and an academic project supervisor. Here, you'll apply the knowledge, skills and experience that you have developed to focus on a specific topic area. Topics might include actuation and sensor systems; intelligent, adaptable power systems; or efficient, clean propulsion technologies.Mechanical and Electrical Engineering graduates will be equipped to innovate in a range of technological areas. These might include:the power flow of renewable energy microgridsactuation systems for motion control or roboticsthe complete power train of future electric vehicles.
